Jainism

Todays stamp displays the Calcutta Jain Temple aka Parshwanath Temple. Jainism is an ancient Indian religion, which after reading about it, seems to me to bear a lot of practices of Buddhism. I couldn't help but notice that the symbol they use is unfortunately the same symbol as that adopted by the Nazi's, what a horrible thing for people of any religious faith to have to deal with. 1 and a quarter Annas!!

Hindu Temple

The trend ends today with the 1 Anna in the set. This Hindu temple is quite old, parts of it are believed to date back almost a thousand years.

While the centering leaves a bit to be desired, MNH is a bonus.

Kolkata

I learn something new every day, or should I say something old? When was Calcutta renamed Kolkata? I'm usually the last to learn everything. Anywho...this 9 Pies stamp has the Victoria Memorial in (the formerly named) Calcutta. I sense a theme trend with this set of King George Silver Jubilee's. Let's see if this trend continues. Indian currency confounds me, but I think only because the names have been changed. There were either 16 Pies in an Anna or 12, perhaps someone can help me with that one. But what is a Rupee then?

Memorials that serve an actual function are the best of all. This one serves as a museum and gardens.

Gateway of India

I'm closing in on having all the King George Silver Jubilee issues.  It's quite fitting that the Gateway is on this issue from this Indian 1/2 Anna. The Gateway was built to commemorate George along with Queen Mary's visit in December of 1911.

India's commemorative series catalogues at the higher end of value when compared to the other countries which issued them. They are in my view more aesthetically pleasing on the whole also.

Unique Address?....Priceless.

A postcard of the Golden Throne in Mysore Palace is a fantastic addition to my postcard collection. Follow those links and you'll see what I mean. Multiple stamps are always a plus on cards I receive also. There can never be too many stamps on a card or envelope one receives. The entire region this card comes from is deeply steeped in mythology, religion and military history and yet, I cannot help but find my attention drawn however to the unique return address on this card. I read an article recently about the Jamaicans trying to fix the address system so as it is easy for postmen to find the recipient. Here is an address that reminds me of the addresses used there, but this one is in India and please note the line "near varthur Police station" which is what I am referring to as being unique.  Thanks for appreciating my blog Col. Akhil Kumar, you'll be hearing from me soon my friend, via snail mail.

The day of reckoning has come for me. Years, yes years plural, of mail has been arriving at my house and I've been setting it aside with no time to answer it. I got time now. Sameer, forgive me in being remiss on replying till now, this cover rocks! I hope you are still at the same address!!

Cddstamps

Thank you to Michael aka Cddstamps on the world wide web, this too was tucked away. The sandlewood stamp still has scent left tonight. No more scratching for awhile. I'm curious if it will still have scent 10-20 years from now.

More then anything gracias for adding in the quest.

Cochin

#33 a regular postal 3 Annas and an official stamp (note the overprint) an O12 and I truly stand to be corrected.

Another Feudatory State India dated the 1920's basically. Postage 18-23 Officials 18-34....1900's that is.

SRI Rama Varma the Second is who's portrait this is.....Not sure who he was, so if you came up with this on a search for him, please leave a comment.

I gotta admit, I think turbins are cool. I wish I could where one without standing out in the crowd!!! Though this looks like more of a crown. I just happened to think of that.

Travancore

This is one that you really need a stamp guide to find where it's from.

I should say MOST of us. I'll grant some of you may know this place.

It's under the India Native Feudatory States.

Overprints

Imagine collecting overprints. Going thru a stamp catalogue, practically all countries have overprinted stamps.

I wonder if there is a world overprint book? I often see overprint booklets of different countries. Inquiring minds want to know.

Hyderabad O47 in the catalogue. Part of the India native feudatory states. There is another variety of this stamp that was printed with an unshaded background. Nice to have. I'm still looking.
I see this stamp all the time when sorting thru old world mixtures. Funny how you always gotta look at them too, just in case you get an odd one. I'm always looking for odd ones of anything. There IS money to be discovered in places most people would overlook.

Hyderabad

Here's a place not known commonly except for the stamp collector. Hyderabad, located in central India 1869-1948. The kind of place that would pop up on a Jeopardy show.

There's nothing funny about the accident. Accidents are me in a nutshell. But this was so good and depending on your views on things, very fitting.

Does anyone have a quail stamp I could put on todays notes? I know Cees(see link on right) has plenty of chicken stamps. I could find one if I had the time(Wheres my staff?). I realized tonight I have no duck stamps. Someday.

OK guys, I'm just browsing cnn news after I posted this and check out the Bush story I read. I swear, I hadn't a clue when I posted this stamp today. Bush is actually there right now. Some things happen by such coincidence that it's truly uncanny.

Jammu & Kashmir

These stamps are definetly not for the lighthearted.

My Scott's catalogue has lousy images of them and it also says official imitations abound.

These stamps were issued in many colors and paper types from 1878 until 1894.
This is another interesting got from I.O. in a recent Linn's ad.
