Jainism

Todays stamp displays the Calcutta Jain Temple aka Parshwanath Temple. Jainism is an ancient Indian religion, which after reading about it, seems to me to bear a lot of practices of Buddhism. I couldn't help but notice that the symbol they use is unfortunately the same symbol as that adopted by the Nazi's, what a horrible thing for people of any religious faith to have to deal with. 1 and a quarter Annas!!

75th U.P.U. Anniversary

These were issued in a set of 4, naturally I only have the 3 lowest values. Nevertheless it's nice to have these from Singapore. This is an omnibus release, which means that multiples of different countries released stamps commemorating this event. While many countries released matching stamps, some countries also released their own version of stamps in recognition.

We Three Kings

Karl II, Ferdinand I and Karl I appeared on this stamp issued Nov. 1, 1931 commemorating the 50th anniversary of it's elevation to Kingdom from Principality. Romania's independence from the Ottoman Empire was recognized in 1878 by the Treaty of Berlin.
As to why and how the two Karls got on this stamp I have no clue. If your interests include Coat of Arms, they appear to border the vertical edges. This stamp was also printed in a 10 Lei value of a blue color vs this blue green hue. Also the 10 Lei stamp had the years 1881 and 1931 appearing in the dark rectangles on the bottom left and right of the portrait. Someone must have forgotten to put the dates on the 16 Lei issue.

Conversion

This guy, Jose de Anchieta, is credited with saving the souls of the native Brazilian Indians thru Catholicism in the 1500's. He did a pretty good job considering the strength of the Catholic Church in Brazil today. This mint 1954 release commemorates this Spanish Jesuit missionary on the 500th anniversary of his founding of Sao Paulo.

Discovery

Only a postal worker could love such an ugly cancellation eh? This commemorates the 400th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of the America's. It'd be a much nicer example if it weren't for this postmark. Well, no doubt as to the date it was stamped! I'll take what I find though. This is Trinidad #91 in my catalogue  and #92 on this Minkus page.

Last of Solomon Islands for awhile

And for tomorrow, something completely different. OK, well, maybe not completely. Perhaps just another country's tribute to Trafalgar's 200th. So now a $5.00 stamp sheet from the Solomon's.

Barrel of Brandy

Nelson's body was stored in a barrel of brandy for the trip home from his victorious battle as depicted on this 38 pence Gibraltar 200th anniversary stamp.

$10 Stamps

"Hardy" "They have done for me at last."  Nelson spoke after getting shot. Well he learned of his decisive victory before he passed.

This is a sheet of $10 stamps from the Solomon Islands.

Battle Stations!

A sheet of $1.90's from the Trafalgar series issued by the Solomon Islands. The selvage displays the image from the lower middle stamp in the set.

Souvenir Sheet

This TIPEX cancellation quadruples the value over the DC cancellation. I wonder if the doubled mark is from the first one not tying the stamps to the cover and if that would effect the value in any way negatively?

Souvenir Sheets have popped up lately eh? I see a trend here.

The Sultan

I got this one from the office of where I worked. A pair of 125th Universal Postal Union anniversaries and a mango and an oil palm stamp. Johor the city is where the stamp originated and the palm stamp has Johor just above Malasia on the stamp, not so the Mango stamp. The Sultan is also depicted in the corner of the stamp.

Jewels

More of the 1992 set. Looks more like the 1892 reprinted.
Does anyone have the entire 1892 set? I'd love to hear from you and see the scans of your set.

New World

Last week http://blog.michael.dodd.com/ posted a space filler from the U.S. 1892 series. Tonights inspiration.

I was in Boston for the tall ships arrival in 1992, quite the show. Awesome to be there. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/tallships1.html

Yo Ho Ho

Ships of the East India Co. No doubt. Political wealth and human cost is what I think of it all.

I expected to see thins on the backside of these, but was surprised that no gum at all is disturbed. I think that's gum in fact hanging out from the paper on the bottom left of the 22.5.
Oh yeah, the East India Co. makes me think of privateers and pirateers also. Aargh!!

60

Wednesday night I went to my local stamp club meeting for the first time in exactly a year. Next week I go on days and will be able to go to the meetings once again.

Our club made these cool decals to go on envelopes this past year and I was able to scarf a bunch of them.

Heres a nice stamp for collectors of coins.

May daughter came out from CT this week visiting if you are wondering about the blog writing rest.
Somebody may have noticed Moo leaves comments ocasionally. She didn't, I might add, jump at the chance of going to a club meeting.

This is the 150th anniversary of the US Constitution.
A whole set. I'm feeling lucky in my sortings of stamps lately.
These appear to be CTO's.
These stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Co.

Pan America

When do you have a complete set that is incomplete? When you have this set of 4 that has another set issued as air mail stamps(different engraving).

These are the flags of the 21 American Republics and the 50th Anniversary of the Pan American Union.

U.S.S. Argonaut

Being the ex navy man that I am and also an ex submarine builder I really like this cover.

I find the year cancel a bit odd being out of the circle.

Obviously stamp collecting was much more popular back in the thirties.

I wonder how many cachet covers the fleet puts out now?

Maybe I shouldn't have thought of that.

It's hard to imagine that we built the largest submarine to lay mines.
Todays largest submarine is made to lay waste to the world.
Who's worried about global warming?
